One of the many perks of being on top of your finances is the ability to enjoy life a little more. Yes, saving is important, but so is splurging on some family fun or rest and relaxation time as well. It is the goal of my associates and I at Strong Tower Associates to help you make sure you are financially set to enjoy your life to the fullest. Here are some of the things that bring me joy and fulfillment here in the Penn State area. If you are in the area and have not yet experienced these things, you should!
Hiking Mt. Nittany
You will often find my dog and I hiking Mt. Nittany. It is one of the easier hikes compared to some of the other hikes near Penn State. However, when it comes to popularity this one rates a 10. There are 2 main paths: Blue Trail and Circuit Hike. Depending on which paths you take, you can hike anywhere from 2-8 miles. You can circle to the top of the mountain and back down in under 2 hours, or even make a day of it and see the entire mountain in under 5 hours. If you enjoy hiking, Mt. Nittany is a wonderful place to go.
Canoe the Creeks
I personally love to canoe starting up at Spring Creek. This stream is spring fed, so the water level is almost always good for paddling, even in a drought. According to the Canoe Club of Centre County, this is a technical Class 1 paddle. It is a nice and enjoyable mix of meanders, split channels, riffles and an occasional strainer. The run from Tussey Mountain Outfitters (TMO) to Bald Eagle Creek in Milesburg is a 2-mile paddle. The Milesburg Community Center, Dowdy’s Hole, Curtin Village, and Bullit Run are some popular access points to take-out. However, I like to paddle all the way into the reservoir and take-out at one of the 7 public boat ramps at F.J. Sayers Lake.
Indulge in Some Amazing Ice Cream
It’s no secret that there is a pretty serious rivalry between the Penn State Creamery and Meyer Dairy. And for good reason – they are both amazing! The first Penn State Creamery was established in 1865 in the “College Barns”, and over the last 150 years it has remained an important Penn State landmark as well as a world leader in dairy production and food science. They literally use science to make their ice cream amazing. Established in 1887, Meyer Dairy has also been around for over 100 years and is a beloved piece of the State College area. Rather than university level science, they use good old fashioned love and attention to detail to make their family farm ice cream as amazing as can be. All of the milk and eggs are produced on the farms located behind the dairy store, and every step of the ice cream making is done onsite. Now, some people feel led to pick sides in this rivalry, but I say no way! A perfect day for me would be to go to one after lunch and the other after dinner – win-win!
Watch Penn State Games
Of course I could not leave out Penn State sports! Like so many in State College, I love to go to the Penn State football games. However, now that I have young kids, football is getting a little harder to get to in this stage of life. However, I do like to set a goal of going to at least one Penn State football, basketball, hockey, and fencing event. “We are… Penn State!”
